Equally Matched Golfers

Many husbands and wives do not golf together because their skills are too different. But William E. Wilson had a handicap of 20, and his wife, Ann Payne, had a 22, and they played together nearly every weekend from April through October.

"On any given day, I could beat him or he could beat me," Ms. Payne said, "and we loved playing together."

Eight years ago, for his 50th birthday, they took a golf cruise through the Caribbean. It was his idea and he loved it B each day they got off their ship and played golf on a different island.

A marine insurance broker with Aon, Mr. Wilson sometimes played during the week, too, taking clients to his private club's monthly beefsteak lunch and the tournament that followed. In August, he won the tournament for the first time; he was scheduled to play in the next one Sept. 12.

Ms. Payne said that playing without her husband was difficult, but she is doing it. "It's not quite the same," she said. "But I love it and felt like I had to get back."
