'Realized Lifelong Dream'

In Middle Village, Queens, Fire Lt. Kenneth Phelan was memorialized yesterday in the church where, 41 years earlier, he was the first parishioner to be baptized.

More than 500 mourners and firefighters from as far away as London and western Canada jammed Our Lady of Hope Church to remember Phelan, who worked as a city cop for 10 years before realizing a life-long dream of serving at Engine 217, his father's old firehouse in Bedford-Stuyvesant, Brooklyn.

He came from a firefighting family, and studied for his promotion to lieutenant alongside his younger brother, Lt. Lenny Phelan.

He was praised as a family man who savored coaching youth basketball and dressing up in his firefighter's gear at Christmas to cheer up sick children in local hospitals.

But the love of Phelan's life was his wife, Patty, whom he met while both were students at Grover Cleveland High School in Ridgewood, Queens, and their four kids, Kim, Erin, Danny and
"Little Kenny."

"I spent thousands of hours in the radio car with Kenny, and all he talked about was his wife, his family and his church," said Phelan's former partner, retired police Lt. James O'Donnell. "His kids were jewels in his crown."
