Firefighter Was Best of Brothers
Lt. Michael Healey played the role of loving big brother with ease B from taking care of his younger siblings or cooking healthy meals for his brothers in the Bravest.
The 42-year-old fitness buff, who died in the terrorist attacks on the World Trade Center, left his wife and three children, along with kids from his Long Island lacrosse league and heartsick firefighters at Squad 41 in the South Bronx.
Yesterday, a crowd of more than 1,000 gathered to honor Healey at St. Joseph the Worker Church in East Patchogue, L.I.
"I idolized him," Geraldine Chicoine, Healey's younger sister, said. "He took care of all of us and was so good to us."
Chicoine recalled a big brother who as a child showered his four younger siblings with toys and trips to McDonald's.
Healey extended that generosity into adulthood, cooking fat-free meals and building a gym for firefighters at his old Rescue 3 firehouse in the Bronx and spending spare time as a personal trainer and coach of a youth league lacrosse team.
Nineteen kids from the Patchogue-Medford team wore their navy lacrosse jerseys for the funeral. On each jersey was a shoulder patch, which read: "Forever our coach: Mike Healey."
Healey's own children B Michael, 17, Katie, 15, and Matthew, 12 B honored their father with a slide show set to the Billy Joel tune "This Is the Time." The slides showed Healey relaxing next to his backyard pool and frolicking with his kids on trips to the beach.
"I feel many things at this time, but mostly lucky to have had you for so long, but not long enough," Theresa Healey wrote to her husband in a memorial program. "I will miss you so very much."
The couple, who met growing up in Massapequa Park, L.I., would have celebrated their 20th wedding anniversary on Oct. 8.
