From Westchester Journal News Sep 14, 2001

A Tuckahoe village trustee, Michael McHugh is the Republican nominee for the Westchester County Board of Legislators from the 10th district, which includes Eastchester and New Rochelle. McHugh was appointed to fill a vacancy on the village board in 1998 and has been elected twice since then. He served on the village's Board of Planning and Architectural Review, including a year as chairman, from 1994 until his appointment to the village board. He trades energy for Trade Spark, a subsidiary of Cantor Fitzgerald, a Manhattan brokerage firm, which was in Tower 1 of the World Trade Center. He and his wife, Maria Cermele McHugh, have three sons, Michael III, Christian Salvatore, and Connor. "On Sunday, he was at the Tuckahoe Day Street Fair, handing out Italian ices, interviewing people for the local access cable channel," said Eastchester Supervisor James Cavanaugh, who also chairs the Republican County Committee. "He was all over it. That's the kind of thing he liked to do."

From NY Times Oct 31

'Greener Grass Was Here'

Michael McHugh could have stayed in London. Cantor Fitzgerald had sent him there in January to open the firm's energy desk. It meant more B possibly a lot more B money and a new future, and his wife, Maria, was ready for it.

But Mr. McHugh, 35, the sales director of Cantor's TradeSpark division, had sunk his roots too deep in Tuckahoe, a village in Westchester County.

He started as an adjunct member of the village's planning board and quickly moved up to chairman. He loved the town because it was so pleasant and because of all the "normal, unpretentious people" who live there, Mrs. McHugh said.

So in April, Mr. McHugh returned, to Maria and the three kids and the fixer-upper they had bought before they thought they could afford to live in Tuckahoe. Mr. McHugh came back so that his son Michael would not have to change soccer teams and so that he himself could run for the county board of legislators. Now his widow is running in his place in Tuesday's election.

"I thought, `I really can't leave this hanging out,' " she said. "I have to finish it up. To complete a journey that we started."

I remember Mike, usually standing a bit off to the side, almost shyly, but when you met his eyes he would always hit you with the sweetest smile. A truly nice man. A great loss to his wife, his sons, and all that knew him.

I remember working with "Big" Mike at Prudential Securities trading energy futures. He was always a kind, optimistic and fun person to work next to. I remember him fondly at Christmas one year as my secret santa- he gave me a Chia pet...His sense of humor was priceless and i will miss him very much. God Bless His Family always.

I worked with Mike when we were just teens, he was head busboy at an Italian Restaurant in Rockland. He was kind and often gave me rides to work. There was a kind of noble maturity that I looked up to in him back in those days, he was a leader even then. I am so sorry to his wife and children and his parents and family for their loss.
