'A Friend of Little League'

James Hobin coached children for 21 years, long before his two sons started to play baseball and basketball. "I used to get so upset with him. He hadn't mowed our lawn yet, but he was out there mowing that Little League field," said his wife and high school sweetheart, Sheila Hobin of Marlborough, Conn. "People will remember him with that lawn mower hanging out of his truck." He helped get electricity, a dugout and a concession stand for the local field.

He could even be counted on to set up the grid for a local charity's cow chip auction B people bought squares and would win money if a cow deposited a chip on their particular square.

Mr. Hobin, 47, a vice president with Marsh & McLennan, was at the World Trade Center for a meeting.

"The morning of the 11th he had called me at work just to make sure I was there O.K., to tell me he'd be home later that evening," she said. Often, after she dropped him off at the train station, he would call her at her office from the train.

"He was always thoughtful," she said. "He always cared a lot about what we all did, and how we were."
